The two-story penthouse condominium had an existing and aesthetically dated stair which protruded wastefully into the living spaces. BEAUCHER & LEA designed a new custom "floating" stair. The new stair is located near the existing party wall to maximize living spaces on all levels. The newly designed sculptural stair becomes a feature in a light-flooded three-story space.

New floating stair connects two floors and the roof deck. The steel components of the new stair was fabricated by a local metalsmith and the custom wood treads and handrail were installed by the general contractor. The stair is composed of hand cut steel stringers and connections, custom milled solid oak treads and landings, as well as wood , steel and stainless steel railing assemblies.

Existing brick masonry party wall was exposed creating an historic backdrop for the new sculptural stairs.

The stair terminates at its highest level at a new custom skylight hatch. The skylight allows light to flood the stair hall and emphasizes the newly exposed brickwork and custom wood, steel, and stainless steel stair components.

Custom milled solid oak treads, landing, and handrail offer a warmth to the touch as one experiences the stair. The treads and landings are held off the brick wall to emphasize the floating nature of the sculptural stair. The steel structure connecting the stair was meticulously detailed to feature minimal connection points to the existing brick wall.
