Katharine A Lea, A Professional History
In 1994, Katharine A Lea graduated summa cum laude from North Carolina State University , where she received a Bachelor of Architecture. She also earned a Bachelor of Environmental Design in Architecture in 1993, summa cum laude, with an English Literature minor.
After graduation, Katharine moved to Boston , Massachusetts and started her professional career at DiNisco Design Partnership. Projects Katharine worked on as an intern architect at DDP included studies for the Brockton Courthouse and a Justice Complex for Nantucket , which combined sheriff, police, and court facilities, as well as design and preparation of construction documents for various courthouses and schools including the Falmouth Trial Court and North Andover Middle School .
In 1996, Katharine relocated to Richmond , Virginia , to take advantage of a job opportunity at Bond, Comet, Westmoreland + Hiner architects. While with BCW+H, Katharine designed and detailed the library and central pod areas of Prince George Middle School, exterior canopies and walkways for Collegiate Lower School, and was a co-job captain for the Maymont Nature Center, a high end aquarium/ museum located on a former railroad baron’s estate which has been converted to a park in central Richmond. Working on these buildings, with their multitudes of materials, including exposed steel structure, wood siding, masonry cladding of stone and brick, and exposed concrete, gave Katharine valuable experience working with many building materials. Because BCW+H typically has an aesthetic of exposed HVAC systems, Katharine also learned about careful coordination of the subcontractors’ work.

Katharine’s next professional move was to ARC/ Architectural Resources Cambridge. Here, Katharine was job captain in 1998 for the 12 million dollar, publicly bid University of Massachusetts Lowell Campus Center. This brick and glass building, with exposed ducts, sprinklers, and steel structure, required careful design and coordination. |
| During her 7+ years at ARC, Katharine worked in various capacities as designer, project architect, and project manager for diverse projects including Wilmington Middle School (2000), Masconomet Regional School (2000), Pollard Memorial Library in Lowell (2001) (historical renovation/ public bid/ 7.5 million dollar/ construction administration), Harvard Medical School (2003), Abbott Laboratories Addition (2003), Wyeth Laboratories Cafeteria (2003), Duke University Residence Hall (LEED accredited) (2003), BR+A New Offices (2004), and Genzyme Science Building (2004-5). |

At the Narrow Gate, she was Project Architect and Project Manager for a 3 building, 18 unit affordable housing development in the City of Boston , as well as a homeless shelter renovation in Somerville. For the City of Boston project, she worked with LEED requirements.
Throughout her career, Katharine has done residential and small projects on the side, including a 2500 square foot house on a lake in Western Massachusetts, a pottery booth for a permanent-site summer fair, a clothing booth for the same fair, renovations to a house in North Carolina, porch renovations for a house in Maine, and condominium documents for condominium conversions in Boston, Somerville, and Cambridge.
